California Quail (Callipepla californica)

Order: CHICKEN-LIKE BIRDS (GALLIFORMES ORDER)
Family: QUAILS (ODONTOPHORIDAE)

Included in ABA Region.


Found in open forests, easily seen in most California parks, . Best time to see them is early morning and possibly before sunset. They are not very secretive, although always shy away when they see humans, , They do respond to calls and sometimes can be heard from too far.
